Chapter 18

Brotak

I thought my eyes were deceiving me when I came upon Marion sitting at the frozen stream next to Ama, Faleon grazing around the area for something to eat while she talked. Apparently she has made a new friend, something she has managed to keep secret from me. Her deception causes my blood to boil to the point where I need an outlet for the sudden surge of adrenaline coursing through my veins. I push Vultos to run the rest of the distance to the Theki clan village, all too aware of Marion’s body pressed against my back.

Now, not only have I discovered her lies but I have to admit to Thiku the reason I cannot marry his daughter and she is riding behind me as visible proof of what I’ve done. He will consider the sight of her to be an insult and it will further risk clan war. And yet, even in my anger I won’t send her back alone.

“When we reach the Theki clan borders, you do exactly as I say. Do not speak, do not move unless I tell you to do so. Understood?”

“Yes.” Her voice is quiet, barely more than a whisper but she doesn’t get to feel sad that I’m angry with her because of her disobedience.

“I can’t hear you,” I say, my body still buzzing with a mixture of emotions.

“Yes,” she says, louder this time.

Dhacar and Vrihith approach from both sides, Ama sharing Vrihith’s beast. We reach the top of a hill that looks down into a frozen wooded ravine and this is where Ama’s clan appears. At least the warriors who will accompany us further into the village where we’ll meet with Thiku. One of the warriors from the Theki clan glares at Vrihith until Ama slides from his beast and rejoins her clan. Then with an angling of his head, he indicates we should follow.

We travel down at first, twisting through trees as we follow well-worn paths that will lead us to the heart of the Theki village. This isn’t the first time we’ve been here and unlike our caves, they’ve constructed sturdy huts within the forests that provide quality shelter during the winter months. Not only are their huts made of logs from the trees, but they wrap them in the same oil-treated leather that we use to repel water and keep out the wind. The trees also provide shelter above from the Drattur like our caves in the mountain. Those of us who have been here long enough know of the dangers of being exposed in the open because we learned the hard way. No matter how angry I might be at Marion right now, I do not want her people to suffer the same fate mine did all those years ago.

The warriors lead us to one of the larger huts in the center of the trees where we stop our beasts and dismount. Marion lingers on top of Vultos but as soon as I extend my arms she comes to me.
